IN THE HOTEL room, he tried on the gold sparkly trunks, and I couldn’t resist, so we jumped on the bed for a bit, and well, you can guess what happened then. Afterwards, as we lay together, him spooning me from behind, kissing my neck, his hot breath on my skin, he said he was sorry, that he hadn’t meant for it to go so far, that all he had wanted to do was make them understand it wasn’t acceptable to talk to people like that, and to give us the respect we deserved.

So, how could I argue with that line of reasoning? I couldn’t, so I didn’t, and he had run to my rescue in a roundabout way. And it had been quite satisfying seeing the two little pissants running off in disgrace, like they’d wanted us to do.

Later, on the walk to the spa, we picked up the coming-out-to-Kieran conversation where we’d left off.

Rocky slung his sports bag, full of a towel and his tiny shorts, over his right shoulder and took me with his left hand. “Been thinking about this. Maybe you shouldn’t push it down when you’re with this Kieran. It’s part of you, isn’t it? So why do you want to hide part of you from a new friend?”

He had a point, a very good point, did my sexy builder boyfriend.

“Do you keep it from anyone who you’re really close to? Not just colleagues but proper friends, you know.”

“Not after the dad incident, I don’t. Can’t be bothered. It’s so much harder to lie than just be honest about it. It’s like coming out again every time.”

“And does this Kieran seem like someone you’d like to be good friends with?”

“Can’t tell for sure, but we clicked, you know. More than a lot of the others at the group. I can’t say why, but, yeah, we clicked.”

“I know. Well, let’s work out a plan to show him this other side of yourself without having to sit him down and have that conversation.”

I nodded.

We were now at the large special Bath-stone spa building.

Rocky flashed his tickets at the receptionist. We walked through to one side of the desk, following the signs for men’s changing rooms. A woman handed us a fluffy white towel and dressing gown each. Inside the men’s changing room, we put our bags on the wooden bench around the edge of the hot steamy room.

Rocky quickly undressed and slipped on a tiny pair of red, white, and blue Speedos.

“No gold ones?” I looked him up and down, taking in his impressive physique that came from hard physical labour five days a week.

He winked. “Thought I’d keep them for back at the hotel.” He paused, and then squeezed my shoulder. “Whatever you decide to do with Kieran, I’ll be there with you on the night. Promise.”

“Thanks.” My heart melted at this chivalry. This time was much better placed than the angry shouty version from before. I felt my strength and resolve to tell Kieran grow inside me.
